The Bone Yard Pet Shop was first started in November 2021 right here in Bloomington, Indiana as a grooming only facility. Starting off all on her own with one grooming table, Kristal managed every role from bather and groomer to customer service and manager. The Bone Yard’s business picked up quickly, so Kristal had to hire on some extra help. She has personally taught every groomer who has worked for The Bone Yard to ensure a standard of care and quality that can be matched by whoever takes care of your dog. We are now operating with three grooming tables, three full time groomers and a couple of part time groomers as well!
We very quickly recognized the need for our clients to have the option for daycare on the days of their dog's grooming appointments, so we opened up a very small daycare in the groom shop that would allow the dogs to have some fun while waiting to get groomed or go home! It did not take long at all for the daycare to become so popular it could no longer fit in the groom shop.
From there we secured another unit and, with some help, fully renovated it into a Doggy Daycare. Opening up in April of 2023, the daycare was a big hit with plenty of extremely loyal and loved clients right away. Since that day it has gone through some big changes! In July of 2023 we made the move online with our software system, PetExec, as well as launching our Dog Training program! February 2024 we built a wall to separate the front door from the daycare, keeping the dogs more secure and providing them less distractions from outside.
Although Doggie Daycare is plenty of fun on its own, we started offering Extravagant Extras in July of 2024. We were already offering birthday parties for dogs to celebrate with their friends, but now we have plenty of more fun and exciting options to spruce up your dog’s day including Yappy Hour Treats, Outdoor Walks and more! These were all a big hit from our clients right from the start.
Things ran so smoothly for the next few months that we began offering overnight boarding in September of 2024. We wanted our boarding style to be a fully cage free, open concept from the start and we made it happen! When dogs stay overnight with us, they get a full day of daycare playing with all their friends, then they snuggle up on some cots, a couch, or wherever they choose to get a good night’s rest.
We have gone through so many incredible and exciting changes in the short time we have been operating, and there are plenty more to come in our future! None of it would have been possible without the continued support of our clients, both new and long term. We cannot thank our clients enough for the honor of choosing us to care for your furry family members.
My name is Kristal Oldfield, co-owner of The Bone Yard Pet Shop. I started my career with animals working in a veterinarian office in 2006. I was trained by a master groomer and I have been consistently grooming and perfecting my art form for over 5 years now. I am frequently continuing my education in dog psychology to help achieve positive behaviors and acceptable canine socialization to be able to implement these techniques in my daycare and pet grooming facility. I have completed online coursework through Barkleigh and received certificates of completion in Vaccines, Safe Group Play and Managing Group Play, Infection Control, Safe Handling and Pack Fundamentals. I am also currently studying Dog Obedience Training & Instructor through Penn Foster College pursuing my diploma. I believe that each pet has their own personality and it's up to us professionals to be well educated to help each pet when expressing their emotions and identify those through body language and recognize their intentions through their motions.
